Are you standing before God trusting your record, or recognizing your need for mercy?
In Luke 18:9–14, Jesus tells of two men who went to the temple to pray.
One was a Pharisee. He looked at his religious life, his obedience, and even the failures of others as reasons to think highly of himself before God.
The other was a tax collector who would not even lift his eyes toward heaven. He simply pleaded for mercy.
Jesus says it was the tax collector who went home justified rather than the Pharisee.
The contrast is not between a religious person and an irreligious person. It is between self-righteousness and humble dependence upon God’s mercy.
We are not made right with God by comparing ourselves with others or presenting Him with our spiritual accomplishments.
We come before God with empty hands, acknowledging our sin and our need for mercy.
So ask yourself:
Am I trusting in my own record?
Or am I humbly depending upon the mercy of God?
Humble yourself before God. Do not trust your record. Trust in His mercy.
