Watch the Foundations of the Faith teaching here: What Really Happened at the Cross?
What really happened at the cross?
Many people know that Jesus died.
But what did His death actually accomplish?
From the very beginning, sin separated humanity from our holy God.
Throughout the Old Testament, God gave Israel sacrifices that pointed forward to something greater. Those sacrifices reminded His people that sin brings death and that forgiveness requires the shedding of blood.
God also spoke through the prophets, revealing His plan to send the promised Redeemer.
Then, at just the right time, Jesus Christ came.
The cross wasn’t an accident.
It wasn’t a tragic interruption of God’s plan.
It was God’s plan.
According to the Father’s eternal plan, Jesus willingly gave His life as the perfect sacrifice for sin.
He bore the judgment sinners deserved so that everyone who repents and believes in Him can be forgiven and reconciled to God.
Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, declaring His victory over sin and death.
Jesus then ascended to the Father, where He reigns today until He returns just as He promised.
Today, this same gospel is proclaimed throughout the world, calling people everywhere to repent, believe, and be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ.
The cross is where God’s perfect justice and God’s perfect mercy meet in Jesus Christ.
Soli Deo Gloria
To God alone be the glory.
