More Than a Verse | Matthew 7:7–11
“Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Who among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him.”

Matthew 7:7–11 is sometimes treated as a promise that if we ask God for something persistently enough, He will eventually give us what we want.
But Jesus is teaching something much richer than that.
Audience
Jesus spoke these words to His disciples and the crowds during the Sermon on the Mount, teaching His followers what life under the rule of their heavenly Father should look like.
Context
Throughout the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches His followers to live with trust in God rather than anxiety or self-reliance.
Here, He encourages persistent prayer by directing their attention to the goodness of their heavenly Father.
The emphasis is not merely on the persistence of the person asking. It is on the character of the One being asked.
What This Passage Does Not Mean
This passage is not a promise that God will always answer our prayers according to our desires or our timing.
Prayer is not a technique for forcing God’s hand.
Jesus is teaching His followers to come to God confidently and persistently because He is a good Father who knows what is truly good for His children.
Meaning
Jesus uses the relationship between an earthly father and his child to make His point.
Even imperfect human parents generally desire to give good things to their children. How much more, then, can God’s children trust their perfect heavenly Father?
We can pray with confidence because God is good.
His answers are governed not only by His power, but also by His wisdom, goodness, and perfect knowledge of what His children truly need.
Today
Bring your requests to God with confidence and perseverance.
Keep asking. Keep seeking. Keep knocking.
But trust not only in God’s ability to answer, but also in His wisdom to give what is truly best.
Persistent prayer is not an attempt to wear God down.
It is an expression of dependence upon a Father who is good.
