Psalm 23 (ESV)
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
🔥 Opening
Few passages in Scripture are more familiar than Psalm 23.
It has comforted believers in peaceful seasons, carried many through suffering, and is often read at funerals and memorial services.
Yet its greatest message is not about death.
It is about the Shepherd.
David’s confidence is not rooted in easy circumstances. It rests in the faithful presence of the Lord who provides, leads, restores, protects, and ultimately brings His people home.
Historical Context
Psalm 23 is a psalm of David.
Before becoming Israel’s king, David spent years as a shepherd. He understood firsthand the responsibility of caring for sheep that were vulnerable and dependent upon their shepherd.
David draws from that experience to describe his relationship with the Lord.

Psalm 23:1 — The Shepherd Provides
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
David begins with a declaration, not a request.
Because the Lord is his Shepherd, David lacks nothing God knows he truly needs.
This is not a promise of unlimited prosperity.
It is a statement of confidence in God’s faithful provision.
The Shepherd provides according to His perfect wisdom.
Psalm 23:2–3 — The Shepherd Leads and Restores
“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.”
The Shepherd provides rest, nourishment, restoration, and direction.
“He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
God’s guidance is never arbitrary.
He leads according to His wisdom, for His glory, and for the good of His people.
The sheep do not determine the path.

Psalm 23:4 — The Shepherd Is Present in the Valley
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”
David does not deny suffering.
The valley is real.
Danger is real.
Fear is real.
Yet his confidence remains.

“For you are with me.”
The believer’s security is not found in the absence of hardship, but in the presence of God.
David also points to the Shepherd’s rod and staff.

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”
The imagery shifts from Shepherd to Host.
Even in the presence of enemies, God continues to provide and care for His people.
“You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
God’s care is not interrupted by difficult circumstances.
His provision remains sufficient even when opposition remains.
Psalm 23:6 — The Shepherd Brings His People Home
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.”
David looks backward and forward with confidence.
God’s goodness and steadfast love are not temporary.
They pursue His people throughout their lives.
“And I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
The final destination of the believer is not merely relief from hardship.
It is everlasting fellowship with the Lord.
The Shepherd who leads His people through this life ultimately brings them into His eternal presence.
Canonical Context
The Shepherd theme runs throughout Scripture.
God repeatedly identifies Himself as the Shepherd of His people.
The prophets condemned unfaithful shepherds who failed to care for God’s flock and pointed toward the coming of a faithful Shepherd.
That promise reaches its fullest expression in Jesus Christ.
Jesus declares in John 10:11:
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
The Shepherd of Psalm 23 is not an abstract image.
The New Testament reveals Christ as the Good Shepherd who gives His life for His sheep, knows them personally, preserves them, and leads them into eternal life.
Biblical Theology
Psalm 23 presents salvation and the Christian life from the perspective of dependence.
Sheep do not sustain themselves.
They depend upon the shepherd.
In the same way, God’s people depend upon Him for provision, restoration, guidance, protection, perseverance, and final salvation.
This does not mean believers are passive.
They follow.
They trust.

It is revealed as we continue following the Shepherd through them.
There will be seasons when we do not understand the path God has chosen.
But the sheep do not need to understand every turn in the road.
They need to know their Shepherd.
For those who belong to Christ, Jesus is the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for His sheep.
Our confidence therefore rests not simply in the idea that God cares.
It rests in the Savior who proved His love at the cross and conquered death through His resurrection.
📈 Progress
Spiritual maturity grows as we learn to trust the Shepherd in every season of life.
Faith is strengthened not only in green pastures, but also in dark valleys.
Over time, believers learn that circumstances change while God’s character remains constant.
Growth means learning to follow when the path is clear and when it is not.
The more we know the Shepherd, the more confidently we can trust His leading.

The Shepherd who cared for David still cares for His people.
His presence does not remove every hardship.
It assures us that we never face those hardships outside His care.
He provides what His people need.
He restores.

Where have I been relying upon my own understanding rather than following the Shepherd’s leading?
Where has God already demonstrated His faithfulness in my life?

Will I trust His presence even when I cannot yet understand His purpose?
⚖️ Closing Charge
Psalm 23 calls us to lift our eyes above changing circumstances and fix them upon the Shepherd Himself.
His provision is sufficient.
His guidance is trustworthy.
His presence is constant.
His promises are certain.
Continue following the Shepherd with confidence.
The One who faithfully leads His people today will also bring them safely into His eternal presence.
